Tapping Point: Contactless Payments in Latin America Approach Critical Mass

A Mastercard Data & Services Report

The number of contactless-enabled cards in Latin America almost tripled over the year leading up to the fourth quarter of 2019.

Now that most cards in the region are issued by banks with contactless certifications, the percentage of contactless-enabled cards will continue to increase rapidly as issuers commit to the technology. From that perspective, Latin America is approaching a tipping point in contactless adoption, accelerated further by COVID-related changes in consumer behavior.

35% of respondents in Latin America and the Caribbean say they have increased their usage of contactless payments since the pandemic started.
